Discovering the Bible
Why is it vitally important that we come to understand the words and message of the Bible? Is it possible to see the Bible as a single unified book? What is the purpose of the Old Testament - and is it even relevant today? What about the portions of the Bible that are difficult to understand?
Discovering the Bible provides compelling answers to these crucial questions and so much more. It serves as a valued guide and companion on a memorable journey through the full panorama of Scripture, from Genesis to Revelation. It demonstrates how the Bible is a single unified story about Jesus Christ and His astounding plan to redeem mankind. Understanding the Bible’s message is indispensable because it contains every word that God deliberately chose for us to have in this age. It reveals all we need to know to come to Jesus in faith, to love Him completely, and to trust Him fully.
Discovering the Bible has been published in seven languages and is designed for individual study, Bible study groups, and churches.
Two new editions of Discovering the Bible were released on December 20, 2024:

Gordon Addington was both a medical doctor and lifelong student of the Bible. Prior to attending medical school, he served on staff with Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship, where teaching students how to study the Bible was a prominent part of his ministry. Throughout their sixty-one years of marriage, Gordon and his wife Bonnie regularly led Bible studies in their home and neighborhood. Two of those Bible studies developed into vibrant evangelical churches. In addition to his medical degrees, Gordon earned BDiv and DMin degrees from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School.
“Discovering the Bible fills a much-needed gap in contemporary Bible study. Not only is it a very readable and practical commentary on the whole Bible but it is also a helpful reader-sensitive guide to biblical prophecy and the messianic hope that finds fulfillment in Jesus Christ. Its layout and use of clearly marked codes for Bible study make it a unique contribution to the layperson’s and the serious student’s library.”
- JOHN H. SAILHAMER, PhD, former professor of Hebrew and Old Testament, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Wake Forest, North Carolina
“Gordon Addington is steeped in the Bible. This surgeon and former missionary weeps with the sorrowing and cheers with the jubilant. Discovering the Bible consistently calls us to accountability and allows Scripture to interpret Scripture.”
- WARREN S. BENSON, PhD, former professor of Christian education, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School; former senior professor of Christian education and leadership, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky
“I’m interested in any tool that will get people into God’s Word and help them in their understanding of God’s truth in their lives. In Discovering the Bible, Dr. Addington has given us an effective means of grasping the grand scope of God’s revelation.”
